Approximately £2 billion lifetime benefits boost for Island

An economically transformative opportunity:

• Participation in major offshore wind developments supports the Isle of Man Government's long-term Economic Strategy by helping to diversify the economy, developing skills in emerging industries and creating new, sustainable sources of economic growth. 
• Rental and taxation revenues from the Mooir Vannin wind farm would go directly to the Isle of Man Government. The estimated economic contribution of Mooir Vannin to the Island through taxation and seabed rental is in the region of £2 billion over the estimated 35-year operational lifetime of the project.
• On average this means £55-60 million per year in contributions to the Isle of Man Government revenues based on current project parameters. This would represent a brand-new source of income equating to approximately 3-4% of total government revenue, creating a meaningful and positive new opportunity for the Island’s public finances. To put that into context, annual revenue of this scale is equivalent to the Isle of Man Government’s pink book forecast net expenditure on all primary schools and University College Isle of Man combined.
• Mooir Vannin tax receipts will support the Isle of Man Treasury’s goal to diversify and strengthen the Island’s tax base away from personal taxes, to develop a sustainable and diversified tax base to strengthen the Island's long-term fiscal resilience.
• Although the exact details of the lease agreement are confidential, they are on similar favourable terms to Isle of Man Treasury as equivalent arrangements in the UK.

Supporting the Isle of Man supply chain and skills

The project will create opportunities for local businesses across the project lifecycle by:

• Providing long-term opportunities for supporting businesses and job roles through an Operations & Maintenance base in Douglas harbour.
• Generating opportunity throughout the offshore wind project lifecycle for local businesses, for example, engineering, marine services and port operations.
• Over the past five years, Ørsted has awarded major contracts to more than 250 UK-based suppliers, with many hundreds more supported indirectly to help build and maintain our offshore wind farms. 
• Supporting the STEM skills development for offshore wind and other key business sectors across the island. For example, in the Humber region our investments and partnerships in University Technical Colleges are important steps to help young people be work ready through specific training to fill regional talent gaps.
• To meet the UK’s renewable energy targets, according to the UK Offshore Wind Workforce Report, it is expected that between 75,000 – 94,000 workers will be required in the offshore wind sector by 2030, requiring extensive job training and opportunity.

Working with the Isle of Man community

We deliver more than green energy – we deliver lasting positive community impacts.

• Long-term presence in the community — from development through to decades of operation — building lasting local relationships.
• Since 2023, on the Isle of Man, we have been working collaboratively with a number of local events, organisations and initiatives to support the delivery of lasting positive benefits to the Island’s community.
• In addition, a Community Investment Fund of £1.5 million per year for the first 15 years of operation (£22.5 million) would go to community causes and infrastructure projects for the benefit of all Island residents.
• The fund would be run by the local community for the benefit of the local community via an independent body of local representatives.  
• Ørsted’s structured approach to community benefit funds and partnerships will help ensure local communities share in the long-term value of the offshore wind farm.  
• Our current four funds in the UK have invested £12.8m across 900 projects to date, funding community activities & services, nature & public open spaces and sports recreation & play initiatives.

Protecting the Isle of Man’s biodiversity

Mooir Vannin Offshore Wind Farm will strengthen the Island’s UNESCO Biosphere status with:

• A focus on protecting and enhancing marine and coastal ecosystems, building on Ørsted’s experience delivering ‘Wilder Humber’ - a five-year seascape restoration project in the Humber Estuary. To date, the project has restored 18 hectares of seagrass habitat and re-introduced over half a million oysters into the estuary.
• Detailed environmental studies to understand local habitats and species, including how species interact with our windfarms. This work guides the development and testing of nature inclusive design measures. For example, research by our academic partners showed the beneficial effects of our ‘cod pipe’ artificial reefs to juvenile and adult cod in the North Sea.
• Measures built into the project to avoid, reduce and manage potential impacts. We utilise our experience and expertise to avoid sensitive habitats such as chalk reef, reduce and mitigate impacts such as underwater noise using a range of evidence-based measures. At all new projects, we build on this approach to deliver a Net Positive Impact on biodiversity. 

This approach supports the long-term protection of the Island’s biodiversity alongside sustainable economic development.

Delivering on the Isle of Man Government’s ambitions

The Mooir Vannin Offshore Wind Farm will help the Island transition to renewable energy by:

• Contributing to long-term economic resilience and diversification of the tax base through seabed rental and taxation totalling around £2 billion over 35 years.
• Playing a role in the transition to secure renewable energy by supplying the Island with green electricity from Mooir Vannin.
• Aligning with the Island’s net-zero and sustainability ambitions thereby increasing attractiveness for Island businesses, particularly those with specific ESG targets like international finance institutions.

Bringing Power to the Island

Mooir Vannin Offshore Wind Farm could bring secure renewable energy direct to the Isle of Man’s electricity grid.

• We’re working in partnership with Manx Utilities and Isle of Man Government to explore possibilities for how to bring power to the Island.
• We’ve identified two options:
  • A new electrical cable directly between the wind farm array and the Island.
  • Connect the wind farm solely to the UK grid, with the option to supply the Island through the Manx 1 interconnector with cheaper wholesale green electricity.
• Under our current plans for 87 turbines, only a small amount of power from Mooir Vannin (less than 10%) would be required to meet the Island's current and forecast future energy demands. This highlights how offshore wind could be the backbone of the Isle of Man’s energy strategy.

This included Ørsted’s Community Information Events held across the Island as part of the pre-application process, in addition to the Isle of Man Government’s own public consultation process last year. The project is now going through a rigorous independent examination process
