Mooir Vannin Offshore Wind Farm

The Mooir Vannin Offshore Wind Farm presents a unique, once-in-a-generation opportunity for the Isle of Man to support a project that is both environmentally responsible and economically transformative. 

Mooir Vannin would deliver approximately £2 billion in financial benefits to the Island through taxation and rent paid directly to the Isle of Man Treasury, as well as a Community Investment Fund. All the benefits that the Mooir Vannin Offshore Wind Farm would deliver require no direct investment or subsidy from the Isle of Man Government and there is no capital or operational expenditure risk to the Government or taxpayers. 

The wind farm has the potential to deliver wider economic advantages including jobs, supply chains benefits, renewable electricity and energy security.

Offshore wind is not a distant aspiration - it's a proven, practical, reliable, and scalable solution.

Mooir Vannin would provide a unique opportunity to be the first step toward a greener, more secure future for the Isle of Man.

Mooir Vannin would bring significant financial benefits with approximately £2 billion to the Island through taxation and rent. 

In addition, new long-term, well-paid jobs would be created by Ørsted establishing a state-of-the-art Operations & Maintenance base in Douglas, with roles in engineering, marine operations and port services. The wind farm would also boost local businesses by encouraging firms to join Ørsted’s supply chain.

In the UK, where we have operational offshore wind farms, we have seen it revitalise coastal communities and stimulate long-term industrial investment.

The timeline for the wind farm is for it to be operational in the first half of the 2030s, with an expected lifespan allowing it to generate renewable energy into the 2060s.

Mooir Vannin offers an unprecedented chance to secure new revenue streams for the Island, create long-term skilled jobs for residents, and generate funds that would go directly to the local community.

Secure, renewable electricity 

At a time when energy security and economic resilience are firmly at the top of the Island’s agenda, Ørsted’s proposals would enable the Isle of Man to use its abundant natural resources to reap the multiple benefits of renewable energy.

There are two options to bring electricity generated by the Mooir Vannin Offshore Wind Farm to the Isle of Man.

1.  A new electrical cable directly between part of the wind farm array and the Island.

2.  Connect the wind farm solely to the UK grid, with the option for the Island to buy power generated by the wind farm.

We are in discussions with Manx Utilities and Isle of Man Government departments to explore these possibilities.

Ørsted is a global leader in offshore wind. We have more than 30 years of industry experience, having built the world’s first offshore wind farm.

The UK is our biggest market, with 12 operational offshore wind farms in UK waters (including six in the Irish Sea) with a total capacity of 5.6 GW, enough to power almost 6 million homes. We are currently building the world’s single largest offshore wind farm 120 km off the Norfolk coast, Hornsea 3, which will generate enough green energy to power more than 3 million UK homes upon completion.

By harnessing stronger, more consistent winds at sea we are able to generate clean, secure, low-cost electricity more reliably – and with Mooir Vannin we can bring the same benefits to the Isle of Man.

At Ørsted, we’re committed to making a positive impact in the communities where we work. Beyond generating clean energy, Mooir Vannin would include direct investment in communities across the Isle of Man by providing funding for local causes that matter to residents.

Central to this commitment is a Community Investment Fund. For the wind farm’s first 15 years of operation, £1.5 million will be awarded annually to charities, projects and infrastructure that benefit the Island. The fund would be fully financed by Ørsted and managed by an independent panel of local representatives. This ensures decisions are made by the community, for the community.

Ørsted’s experience in the UK shows how impactful such funding can be. So far, the company has awarded over £12.8 million to nearly 900 local social and environmental projects near its offshore wind farms.
